I read over the end again. Then one more time.

We need allies . I agree that there’s no way we can get through something like this alone, but allies isn’t the word I would use to describe it. It seems too formal for a personal letter. Too formal for Grant. Along with the fact that he left no date, time, or place to meet, leaves me to assume that he must expect me to show up at his front door. And he didn’t even mention anything about hitting me.

I hear Dean walk into the kitchen. He has fresh clothes on and his hair is still wet, even darker than normal from the shower. A few drops of water slide to the tips of his hair, dripping onto his shirt. From the way he’s walking I can tell he’s sore. He is standing straight, allowing little movement for his back. He hides the pain he’s in well, but I’ve learned to spot the small changes, small strains that indicate he’s not okay. His wet towel is still in his hand and he rubs his hair with it as he walks forward.

“What’s that?” he asks, motioning to the letter with his head. He sets his towel on the table and I hand him the paper. I watch his eyes dart back and forth along it until he finishes reading.

“What do you think?” I ask him when he hands it back to me. His face remains blank. The only sign of life are his eyes which are dark. I put the letter back on the table and cross my arms. Finally he shrugs, though the movement is stiff, almost forced.

“What do you want me to think? I don’t like the guy and he clearly doesn’t like me. And after what he did to you . . . It looks like he’s making an effort and I’ll give him that, although I would have said it to your face instead of in a letter.”

“Of course you would have.”

And after overhearing me talking about how I don’t want to see him also probably didn’t help.

I’m now sure that it was Grant who was following us that first day of training. “But what about the ‘we need allies’ part?”

“What about it?”

“Don’t you think it’s kind of an odd thing to say?”

Dean shrugs again and I really hate that this doesn’t appear to concern him.

“I guess so. Why? Do you think he might try and do something?” I can see the wheels turning in his mind, the idea of revolution, of revolt. I’m sure he’s thought similar things before.

Now it’s my turn to shrug. “You said it, not me.”

“You do realize how stupid that would be, right Kayhlieh? A revolt won’t do anything but get people killed.”

I’m only slightly shocked by his response. I suppose I underestimate Dean sometimes.

“I know that Dean, but does Grant?”

Dean looks tired and he drags his hands down his face. “Let the idiot get himself killed then.”

“Dean.”

“So what are you going to do?” He crosses his arms pointedly.
